I AM A GIFT

When my little sister was born years ago, I went to the hospital with a bouquet of flowers to congratulate my family on the arrival of the new member. Smiling at me, Mother said, “This is your little sister, honey. Come and have a look.” She then murmured to my baby sis, “Little baby, your sister is the best gift your father and I have prepared for you. Open your eyes and look.”

At the time I did not understand what Mother said. I stood at the bedside, admiring my sister’s beauty. What a lovely creature! Her little hands and feet and her rosy cheeks melted my heart right away.

One day last month was my sister’s 10th birthday. Because I am a boarder, I could not make it home to attend the party. I just gave my sister a call and said “Happy Birthday” to her.

This weekend I was able to go home. I said sorry to my sister for not getting her a birthday gift this year. My sister said sweetly, “It’s more than enough to have you back home with me. You are the best gift for me, Sis.”

Oh my dear. What Mother said years ago at the hospital came back to my mind. None of us had mentioned the gift matter very much over the years. Therefore, it was pure coincidence that my sister said I am her gift. My sister was only an infant when Mother said it, but now she has almost grown up.

I’m proud to be my sister’s gift.
