CHEERING THE RUNNERS

Last week the annual sports meeting took place in the school. The most exciting and challenging event, I think, was the 3,000-metre race, because it is a test of a runner’s willpower and stamina. Therefore, when the boys’ 3000-metre race started, I went over and stood by the track to cheer each and every runner. Although I do not know any of them, I thought whoever took part in the long race was well worth my respect. In the beginning I felt a bit shy standing all alone there. It seemed odd for me to cheer those who were complete strangers. However, as the race progressed, my emotions were ignited by the runners’ exertion. My cheering became louder and more vigorous.

After some time, two of my girl classmates came over and asked me, “Do you know them?” I shook my head, saying, “I cheer them out of admiration.” They were confused by my explanation, so I added, “Just now I cheered a boy. My cheering helped him run faster and faster.” Inspired by my answer, the two classmates decided to join me.

Thus, as each runner passed by, we cheered them with unreserved enthusiasm. We noticed some runners glancing back at us as if they were acknowledging our deed. In return we were deeply moved. Can you imagine that we three girls even burst into tears when all the runners were crossing the finish line? In a way, we personally felt that our cheering had played a small part in helping all of them finish the gruelling race. Furthermore, the rapport between the runners and us made us feel that the world is full of love. It teaches us an important lesson that whenever you get into trouble, there must be someone out there who is ready to lend you a hand. It is the helping hand that drives you to strive for your destination. It is the helping hand that makes you dauntless in front of obstacles.

We will no longer have another opportunity to take part in a sports meeting in high school. I determine that in university I will do a 3,000-metre race no matter what.
