From Athletic to Academic

I’m glad to tell you a story about myself, Shengliver.

Two years ago, I was a naive junior high school student specialising in sports. Having trained hard in Chinese wushu for years, I earned second place at a Hubei provincial martial arts contest. Because of my sports achievement, I used to boast about my high athletic level, turning a blind eye to my poor academic performance. I even fantasized about becoming a pro athlete one day, grabbing medals at national and international competitions, so I looked down on those classmates who were studying hard in the classroom every day.

One day, the captain of our wushu team broke his leg while training. As a result, he was unable to complete his PE test and enter senior high school. This accident, which suddenly shook me awake, brought home to me the feasibility of walking the sports path. After that, I was starting to contemplate my future. I searched my soul by asking, “Will I have an easy time if I turn pro? What jobs will be available after graduation? What would I do, should I get injured one day?”

Under the guidance of my family and friends, I gradually realised the importance of my academic lessons. I began to change myself from a sports maniac to a regular hardworking student like most of my classmates. I took more than half a year to improve my ranking in exam results from the 600th to the 120th in my grade. With my effort, upon graduation from junior high, I passed the exams with distinction and managed to make it to YYHS, the best senior high in town.

Every time I look back to my past, I feel lucky I went for the right path at that time. It keeps me from falling into conceit and confusion other sports students suffer.

I today boast a satisfying and pleasant high school life because I regard sports as a hobby and academic courses as my main school responsibility.
