A Fairytale Romance

Shengliver’s Note: Love conquers all. As long as two hearts are together, there is no obstacle they could not surmount on the way to their ultimate culmination. Rebecca and the boy in her heart are living proof.

During the May Day holidays, my aunt came back from her trip to Suzhou, Jiangsu, where her daughter is employed. She announced to the family and friends that my cousin Rebecca would be getting married in June. It was amazing news. We all felt happy for my cousin. She has come a long way on her romantic odyssey.

This year my cousin is 24. She has been dating the boy in her heart for over eight years. Their story started on the Internet when they were still both high school students. Only after they finished high school did they meet each other face to face for the first time. It was a love-at-first-sight experience.

One hurdle stood in their way, though. They are from two different provinces. Worse still, the two lovebirds were admitted to universities located in different parts of China. Rebecca had to attend college in Hubei while her loved one’s university was in Beijing, the Chinese capital.

As the proverb goes, love conquers all. Through the four years of higher education, my cousin and her boyfriend deepened their relationship although they could not meet each other physically on a daily basis.

Upon graduation from college, Rebecca went without hesitation to Suzhou, where she joined her boyfriend. Both landed their jobs in the city. In the years to come, the two sweethearts stuck together through thick and thin, and thus their love blossomed. Now their love story is coming to fruition, with the knot to be tied in a couple of weeks.

My cousin’s fairytale romance never fails to amaze me and to empower me whenever I think of it. What difficulty have they gone through over the years? What prejudices have they come under? And what opposition have their parents voiced to their “unrealistic” love? To join her boyfriend in Jiangsu, my cousin gave up almost everything back in Hubei.

A lot of guys nowadays base their relationships with others on money or power, but I see genuine care and warmth in my cousin’s story. Hence, I am hopeful about my own future romance.

May Rebecca and her man have as sweet a life after the wedding as now. They do have my blessing.
