A Real Learner

My younger brother takes piano lessons every Sunday morning.

Last week, we had a three-day break due to a mock test taken by the graduating classes. Thanks to it, I was able to go back to my home in Fangxian. On the Sunday morning, I accompanied my younger brother to his piano lesson at a training centre.

Next to the piano room is an art room, where at the time over 20 kids ages 5 to 12 were taking a drawing lesson. To my perplexity, seated among the kids was a middle-aged lady, who was working away at an easel on a picture too. She was not the tutor, though.

Two hours later, the art class was over. The lady came out. She was hurrying away when my brother and I went up and buttonholed her. We asked why she was doing drawing together with the youngsters.

“Oh, I love it,” she replied earnestly.

“Don’t you think it is too late for you to take up drawing?” we went on inquiring out of curiosity.

“Oh no, dear. It is never too late,” the lady explained, all smiles. “Nothing has meaning unless you love it. Pursuing a dream makes your life concrete. It is not all about achieving the goal, though. The greatest pleasure lies in the process of ascending to the summit. Boys, what are your ambitions?”

“I want to be a rapper,” I answered.

“I aspire to be a pianist,” my brother chirped.

“Then go all out for your passions, boys. Do not forget to stop and drink in the rich scenery along the way,” the lady beamed enthusiastically, waving us goodbye.
