Shengliver’s Note: Can you imagine a Chinese high school girl knitting a scarf for the boy in her heart?
Three weeks ago in a PE class, I saw my classmate Steven toting a gift box in his hand. It was not big but delicate. I asked the boy what it was. With no other classmates around, he revealed that it was a gift that Mary had asked him to pass on to Jack. Steven left the box on the edge of the sports field before he gambolled away like a monkey to join the footballers.
I cast a glance at the box. It was a pretty beige case, on which were printed floral patterns and flourishy letters. I was dying to know what was in it, but it was disrespectful to open it without the owner’s consent.

I was about to leave when a girl classmate Kathy passed by. Kathy was a cheeky girl. No sooner had her eyes fallen on the package than she undid it without a second thought. To our amazement, it was a long red scarf inside. The pert creature gazed longingly at it.
Later on, I wormed out of Steven more about the gift. He confided to me that Mary had crocheted the wrap personally in her spare time in order to shelter her crush from the biting winds.
Outgoing and boisterous as Mary appears, she is a caring and considerate girl. Jack the lucky dog, I bet, will have a warm season this year, with a “hot” snug muffler round his neck.
