Loss of a Racket Caused Heartache

We normally do not value something until we have lost it.

In August 2021, when remote school was enforced for the second time because of Covid, I came back to the campus one day to collect some books from the classroom. I also wanted to take the opportunity to retrieve my favourite racket. I am a regular badminton player. Having been part of my life for so long, the sport helps me retain some sanity in this insane world.

I made a beeline for the corner where my racket had been stored. It was not there. I got a bit panicky. I combed every conceivable place around the classroom building for it. Still my racket was nowhere to be found. My effort futile, I had to admit that it was lost.

Since then, I have never stopped searching for my favourite racket. I still hope that it will miraculously turn up somewhere. I have bought a new racket to support my badminton practice, and it is not only more expensive but way better than the old one in many aspects as well, but the loss of my good old mate has left a gaping hole in my heart.

The racket had accompanied me for almost 12 years before we parted company. Anytime I held it in my hand, those sweet childhood scenes came flooding back to mind. These days whenever I think of my pet racket, it feels as if a knife were stabbing my heart. I could not miss my favourite racket more.

Having been stung by this harrowing experience, I swear I will never let go of my simple yet important possessions in the future again. Never ever.
