At the start of a new school year, seniors at YYHS have to change dorms. Before I knew it, I had stepped into the last year of high school.
One Wednesday afternoon, our teacher announced that we were to move into a new hall of residence on the same day. It was so sudden that there was no way I could turn to my parents for a hand. They had gone back to our hometown, Zhuxi, days before. Left out on a limb, I had no choice but to rely completely on myself to get it done.
When I went back to the dorm, all the articles that would have to be transported to the new den daunted me. “Can I possibly finish the Herculean task?” I asked myself. To be honest, I doubted it. There being no other solution, I forced myself to pack up. After packing, I found myself being stared at by two large bundles of books, many articles for daily use and lots of miscellaneous clobber.

As I was heaving a bundle of books down the stairs, I felt like throwing them away. They were so hefty that I thought I would be collapsing under the weight any minute. It was high summer. Before long, I found myself perspiring profusely. Fortunately, while I was ascending the stairs leading up to the new dorm, a girl’s parents caught up and gave me a hand. They helped me to lug the books up. Their timely help left me feeling immensely grateful.
After the books were in place in the new dorm, I still had lots of other things to bring over. In total I made five round trips between the old dorm and new. When everything was lying about the new dorm floor, I was virtually exhausted, dripping wet. In the meantime, a sense of achievement was coming over me.
Before I started, I had thought I could not complete such a job alone. The fact that I made it illustrates that nothing is impossible as long as you set your mind upon it. The experience helps me to realise the significance of self-reliance. Others might give you a hand, but it is you yourself who are responsible for your own task and job. And you can accomplish a seemingly insurmountable mission by tackling it piecemeal.
