A Bet

Shengliver’s Note: Gambling is illegal, but this little betting game did no harm to the teens.

My dormmate Caroline shines in most exams. A lot of boys in our class, who are intrinsically biased against girls, cannot stand the fact that a female is able to outperform them in brains. Some boys, therefore, mount a challenge to Caroline. They determine to beat her. David is one of the challengers. The last exam became an arena.

When the challenge was on, Donald the Class Clown, who is a bundle of fun, organised a bet among the boys. They each gave 20 yuan to him for the game. They bet on whether David could win the challenge. If they got it right, their deposit would be refunded plus a fifth of the amount as a reward. If they got it wrong, however, the money would be pocketed by Donald. A lot of boys in our class joined in the exhilarating venture.

It turned out that Caroline was way better than David. No rival to Caroline, David would most likely lose the challenge. To add spice to the gamble, the boys later altered the rules. David would not be able to defeat Caroline, which was for sure. Now they bet on the gap between Caroline’s marks and David’s. Would it be 10, 20 or 30?

When David heard about the betting game before the exam, he got very nervous. Caroline, in contrast, was as cool as a cucumber. That is her style.

When the results came out, the difference between Caroline’s and David’s marks was 33 points. Thanks to Caroline’s outstanding performance, all the betters lost their deposits to Donald. None of them had predicted there would be such a huge difference. Donald the Class Clown got rich overnight.

Our class may be the craziest at YYHS. My classmates must be the most creative in our grade. This hilarious betting experience merits a permanent place in our memory.
