Cheering the Runners

Last week, the annual sports meeting took place in the school. The most challenging event, in my opinion, was the 3,000-metre race, because it was a test of a runner’s willpower and stamina. Therefore, when the boys’ 3000-metre race started, I went over and stood by the track to cheer each and every runner. Although I did not know any of them, whoever took part was well worth my respect.

In the beginning, I felt a bit shy standing all alone there. It seemed odd for me to applaud those complete strangers. As the race progressed, however, my enthusiasm was ignited by the runners’ exertion. While they were having a hard time pushing ahead, my hollering became louder and more vigorous.

After some time, two of my girl classmates came over and asked, “Do you know them?” I shook my head, saying, “I root for them out of admiration.” They were confused, so I added, “Just now I urged a boy on as he was coming up. My cheering obviously helped him go faster.” Inspired, the two girls joined me.

Thus, with each runner passing by, we cheered for them with unreserved gusto. Some racers glanced back at us as if acknowledging our deed. It moved us. Shengliver, can you imagine us three girls even bursting into tears seeing all the runners crossing the finish line?

In a way, we personally felt at the time that our effort to encourage the runners had played a small part in helping them all complete the gruelling race. Furthermore, the camaraderie between us makes us realise that the world is full of love. It raises our awareness that if you are in need, there must be someone out there ready to lend you a hand. It is the helping hand that drives you to strive for your destination. It is the helping hand that makes you dauntless in the face of obstacles.

We YYHS sophomores will no longer have an opportunity to attend a sports meeting in high school, for seniors are excluded from the annual sports event. This time next year, I will be fully occupied in prepping for the university entrance exam. I determine that in university I will do a 3,000-metre race no matter what.
